Predict The End of the Traditional Resume Here - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Now that I have your attention, Id like to go over where resumes (or as some call, the CV) are now and where I feel they will be in the future. If you want to predict how many years it will take for the traditional resume, the one we love to hate, will disappear from the face of the planet, leave a comment citing the amount of years it has left.   My prediction is five more years, which is also aligned to approximately how many years it will take for all media to completely converge and for recruiters to rely 100% on the internet (and personal relationships) for recruitment. A resume, just like a press release, is what people have been used to receiving, viewing and analyzing for years, yet now, with the advent of social technologies, theyve become less and less relevant to our global society. What is a resume and why is it important still? You, just like almost everyone else, were first introduced to the common (and templated) resume format while attending undergraduate college. It might have occurred if you were smart enough to search for internships, in preparation for your entry-level job search or right before your search.   Either way, you were dreading the resume creation and revision process because it felt emotionless and too standardized. Resume: A brief account of ones professional or work experience and qualifications, often submitted with an employment application (The Free Dictionary). The common format: Objective/summary Education Major projects Experience Activities A resume is seen as a candidate marketing document and a requirement for the recruitment process. They are still required today because employers keep databases and file resumes away (probably never to be looked up) just in case there is a potential job fit at some point in time.   Its important because it is a standard way to grade applicants and compare and contrast the contents to each other, in hope to rule one or more out before interviews are held. The resumes many flaws If a resume was powerful enough to get you a job, why are there job interviews? Resumes lack personal connection, which is why they will evolve in the future.   Our society demands a more accurate and painted picture of an individual.   A resume doesnt tell a story, which is why cover letters were created in the first place.   Employers are begging to know why you want to work there and how you go to where you are today, as well as where you see yourself in the future.   This is how they match you to the right job and decide that you mesh well with their culture.   The fact that resumes need to be supported by an interview, a cover letter, references and other documents tells you that hiring managers use them primarily to sort through qualified and unqualified candidates only.   They arent decision making documents, which is a big opportunity for the next generation resume to fix that. What could be the next-gen resume? Ive thought about this question a lot in the past few years and I dont have one solid conclusion.   What I do know is that they may resemble something in between a social media resume and LinkedIn. A social media resume has elements that no traditional resume does, including a self-portrait, sharing features, it lives on a website/blog, it can be customized, and theres multimedia.   The most compelling part of this type of resume is the multimedia area, where you can do a short video resume of yourself talking about why youre different, why youre qualified for the position and why you want to work there.   Theres something special and intriguing about video and since communication skills are a HUGE part of business now, a video is a good way of drawing on emotion and showing those skills to employers.   A social media resume has elements that reflect this new resume that you may see accepted in five years. Buy a webcam and start practicing and recording your pitch through video because video interviews are coming.   There are a few companies that are starting handle video interviews, such as Interview-on-demand (a Personal Branding Magazine sponsor) and HireVue.   Employers are looking to cut costs in anyway possible and this makes sense, especially when the candidate lives in another country or state. LinkedIn also shares some components that illustrate the future of resumes as well. With LinkedIn, companies can share a global talent network, whereas right now companies have their own private databases.   VisualCV is also an interesting website that shows the future of resumes, but the user base isnt even close to as strong as LinkedIn.   Employers dont want to have to go to twenty websites to find talent, which is why there will be one main winner in this game. A few predictions Why does a company need a private database of resumes?   They wont need it when LinkedIn is home to a few hundred million person talent pool in five years. LinkedIn may allow your profile to become more like a social media resume.   It would bring more traffic to them too! Employers are going to have to worry about discrimination through online background checks and figuring out how to store and utilize their talent bases more. Employee referrals will be one of the top recruitment strategies out there because people will be connected to everyone (1st, 2nd or 3rd degree). You wont need to send or print your resume out ever again because all employers will Google you and search your name on the top social networks.   It will be a standard just like a drug test. Your world views and thought leadership will count as much as the contents on your resume.   Companies will be forced to have creative and innovative employees that can look to the future, not the past.   Your ideas are going to matter more than you can ever imagine.   This is something that BrazenCareerist.com founder Penelope Trunk also believe in. How learning a second language can land you a graduate job Over the last ten years universities have experienced an unprecedented influx of interest, and in recent years, with the rise in tuition fees and an unstable job market, more and more graduates have left higher education and felt the pinch of the recession as the reality of unemployment statistics hits home. With the job market so competitive, it’s worth improving your chances by incorporating a diverse skill-set into your CV which will give you that slight edge, raising your chances against a vast opposition. A common misconception, largely held by those whose primary language is English, is that learning another language is superfluous to requirement. Most European destinations, and many others, are educated in both basic and fluent English, so why learn any other languages? Not only is this a step in exercising common courtesy when visiting another country, but learning a second language can help you to better understand entire cultures, which could make you all the more employable. Learning a second language is not only an invaluable tool in everyday life, it also proves a very attractive attribute when dealing with potential employers. International relations in business are more prominent than ever; and if you are comfortable dealing fluently and professionally with foreign clients and colleagues in their native tongue, then you yourself become ever more so the invaluable asset. These days it can feel like even a first class degree isn’t enough to seal the employment deal, so having a second language on your CV could give you the edge when searching for graduate positions. Just don’t, whatever you do, lie about the quality of your language skills when applying for jobs. If the role you’re applying for lists the ability to speak French as ‘desirable’, you can bet that someone on the interview panel will be invited in to test your skills. If you want to learn a second language or develop an existing one that only ever makes an appearance on holiday, there are tools and techniques to use which will help you along the way: Practice in Conversation If you have a friend or family member who just so happens to speak the language you’re aiming to learn, get them to speak it around you. The best way to pick up new words and understand meanings and contexts is to use the vocabulary conversationally. Learn-At-Home Courses There are plenty of language courses you can purchase for use with your home computer that will take you comfortably through the steps of learning new vocabulary and pronunciation. Investing in one of these is well worth your time and money, as they come tailored to a range of abilities and you can learn at your own speed. There are also plenty of apps and online tools that can help you in your efforts, for instance using Google translate when chatting online can help improve your use of vocabulary and its good if you get stuck mid-sentence. Hire a Tutor If you can afford the time and costs of investing in private sessions with a tutor, this can be very beneficial to the speed and accuracy of your learning. Conversational slip-ups are inevitable, but if you come into pronunciation difficulties and turn something like “three apples, please” into a slur of some sort, it helps to do it in the privacy of your own tutoring sessions. Learn with Your Institution There are plenty of opportunities whilst studying at university or college to pick up another language. Most institutions will offer in-house courses, and depending on your course, there could be opportunities for exchange trips and study abroad. The British Council also offers additional monthly funding through the Erasmus scheme for students who decide to study abroad. Arguments, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, Kevin Hogan, and Your Career Musings So tonight the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians tied the World Series at 3-3.  Leading to a historic Game 7 match-up.  Who will win on Wednesday at Clevelands Progressive Field? So Kevins video delves deep into a topic Im sure has come up in many sports households where you dont all love the same team, or at home generally (between kids fighting, parents disagreeing, etc.) What is the topic? How to get out of an argument in 3 minutes! Something that is valuable to all of us. Now I wont give you the answer.  But lets just say that the venue, your physical environment, and movement all play a part. And so that brings me you and your career.  Are you stuck in a rut?  Are the same things annoying you and frustrating you?  A lot of things could be impacting you in your job.  But there is one things that can make a difference. Your environment. Now Ive talked to you about that before.  The big part environment plays in things, especially in sports (aka Tiger Woods meltdown when playing with others who were imploding).  But it is bigger than that.  Your home, your work, the things around you.  All play a part in your success and happiness. Before we wrap that thought up though, lets get back to the Cubs and Indians. Whos going to win? Well if the game went back Wrigley Field in Chicago, then Id be heavily backing the Cubs.  But since it is in Cleveland, the venue is on their side.  Unless you think it is more pressure to perform in front of you home fans.  In which case it looks good for the Cubs.  But then again it could be the Indians because theyve got something to prove.  Or the Cubs because they now have momentum. Now I think Im starting to sound like Vizzini from The Princess Bride Man in Black: All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun. It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right and who is dead. Vizzini: But its so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemys? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. Huh? Yes. What? Absolutely Now heres the secret.  Whether it is what was popularized by Anthony Robbins, and the Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) crowd, as the Pattern Interrupt, or as Kevin Hogan or what used to be popular wisdom, as a change in scenery, moving and changing your environment changes  your emotional state and triggers you in a new way (good or bad).  Heres some things you can change Move furniture around Change the pictures and paintings on your walls Go for a walk Change your boss or coworkers (big change) Swap offices or cubicles Get a new job (major change) So if youre stuck in a rut. Or you find yourself in an argument youd rather not be having.  Use Kevins 3 minute argument nullifying technique. And if its a recurring theme?  Look at changing your environment.  Assess whats triggering you. And if you find that you still arent getting the results you need, then get professional help. And if the problem area is your job or job search, if the results you are getting arent what you feel you deserve, then get in touch with me for some strategic guidance.  Then get back on track.
